青白玉料，玉質清透帶光澤，磨製光潤。橢圓筒狀，上端為斜坡形，上大下小，兩端口徑不一，整體看似馬蹄形，故稱馬蹄形器。全器光素無紋，內壁留有直線或弧線磨痕。 目前發掘的馬蹄形器皆出自紅山文化遺址中，對於他實際功用學術界有多方看法，多數認為其應是做為髮箍，後又因出土位置不同而被認為是護臂器或是祭祀中的樂器
